Learn to Read and You Can Read to Learn Just About Anything
Our Reading Program and Study Hall takes place on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00-4:45 PM to serve neighborhood students. The Reading Program portion focuses on 1st & 2nd graders because of the importance of solidifying reading skills early on in a child’s life. We work with these children on foundational reading skills and sight word recognition, using the Team Read Method. We are passionate about this program due to the known increased risk of dropping out of school that a child faces if not reading well by the 4th grade. Our volunteers are considered Reading Coaches. Most of our Coaches are Saint Louis University Students and Third Baptist Church Members. The Study Hall portion of Wednesday Afternoons are open to Grand Center Arts Academy, North Side Community School and Dunbar Elementary School students. During Study Hall students (3rd-12th grades) are provided a quiet space to do homework, while one or two University Students float to assist them as needed. Please consider becoming a part of this important team of volunteers!
Students & Volunteers are also invited to join us for dinner (free of charge) at 5:00 PM. All are welcome to join us after dinner for Bible Study from 5:30-7:00 PM.
